Get off my land and Ralph
Techniques and
Comparison of Get Off My Land and Ralph
Camera Angles:
Both short films contain many interesting camera angles
particularly towards their beginnings. Ralph uses large open scenery shots
whereas Get Off My Land starts with a tighter closer angled shot. Ralph uses
these wide shots to establish how far out of his comfort zone ralph is. It shows
how small he is in this unwelcoming new place. Whereas Get Off My Land begins
with a more constricted close angle shot focusing on the ground and the feet of
the characters. This is done to focus the camera onto the characters feet. The
feet are a focus because it is used to show how the male character is
unprepared for the countryside as he is wearing unsuitable shoes compared to
the walking boots that his partner is wearing.
Sound (Scene):
Sound is used to set the scene in Ralph. The audience hears
the sound of trains and lots of people which tells us that Ralph is in a busy
train station. We also hear a train platform announcer speaking French which right
away tells us that he is in France. The use of French without subtitles
deliberately means that the audience doesn’t know what most the characters are
saying just like ralph. This is used because the director wants the audience to
feel confused and lost just like Ralph. Sound is also used to set the scene in
Get Off My Land however rather than trying to create the feeling of being
unfamiliar and lost the sound of birds and the gentle breeze of wind is instead
used to create a calm and relaxed feel which contradicts to how quickly things
elevate later in the film.
Sound (Sound Effects):
In Ralph sound effects are used to emphasise what is
important for the audience to pay attention to. For example, the sound of Ralph
pressing the buttons on the pay phone is loud and clear because the director
wants the audience to focus on the fact that he is trying to make a call. This
is important to the story because he then spends a long time trying to get call
his friend but he cannot get through as she gave him the wrong number (perhaps
deliberately). In Get Off My Land sound ,and the absence of it, is used to
great affect when trying to illustrate a point without actually showing it
directly to the audience.
Duration:
Get Off My Land runs for just under 5 minutes. It is short
and as the story elevates quickly there is no need for an extended duration.
This is perhaps symbolic of how quickly the 2 walkers have their lives ended.
However, Ralph lasts for almost 14 minutes and in this time the director uses
all sorts of subtle nuances to tell a deeper story by using acting and
metaphors rather than making everything obvious.
